Race Recap
Press Release:
Sipp has an up and down start at Daytona!
Daytona Beach, FL – Walt Sipp finished 9th in the opening round of
the ASRA Thunderbike Championship. He had to miss Friday practice
and Saturday qualifying due to prior obligations. Obviously this left the
Blue Springs Harley-Davidson sponsored Buell rider in a difficult spot;
having to start from the back of the pack. After arriving Sunday
morning, Walt had to work fast to get up to speed. After his one and
only practice session Sipp said, “All things considered I'm happy. My
practice times would have put me on the front row if I was able to
qualify."
That theme seemed to be carried on in the regional tune-up race.
After starting from the fourth row, Walt was able to make it up to 2nd
by the end of the short, six lap race. Walt said, " Wow, what a start. I'm
just so happy that I was able to throw down some competitive laps
after so little track time. The Thunderbike race is going to be a lot of
fun."
Later that afternoon saw , Walt get a decent start to the Thunderbike
final and he started slowly working his way up through the pack. Walt
said, " It was a lot of fun coming through the pack that way. Although, I
was kind of in the zone, I don't even remember who all I passed and
where!" Sipp looked to be in for his best ever Daytona finish as he
passed the battle that was going on for 2nd. "Yeah, I don't know what
happened, but I knew I was catching them. Then all of a sudden I was
right on their tail going into turn one. I rode behind them through the
infield and into the chicane setting them both up for a double draft."
He easily blew by the two at the exit of the chicane and set out after
the leader. It all went array though a short time later. As he entered
the west horseshoe he slid the front end a little too far and crashed.
Sipp said, "Yeah, I guess I just trailed the front brake in a little too far.
I'm so disappointed. After coming from the back to the front I was
really hoping to finish it off with a podium finish." All wasn't lost though,
he was able to pick up the bike and salvage a 9th place finish.
Look for Walt and the Blue Springs crew to be back fighting for a
podium at the next round April 22-23 at Road America. Walt Sipp is
